Photos taken in the Peewee’s Playhouse children’s party room in the Philippe Starck-designed Paramount Hotel, around the corner from the amazing and long-since-gone Howard Johnson Diner that had wonderful yet cranky matriarchal servers, across the street from the Marriott Marquis Hotel which was the former site of the NMS (New Music Seminar) Conference.

Randy as a pot-bellied Cub Scout trophy winner, and shirtless Bill at the top of the stairs at his old 19th Avenue house a/k/a “the cub house”. These were sent out to perhaps 800 radio stations, newspapers, magazines, record stores, and writers and Mint pals — the American ones mailing-labeled and postage-stamped in an unused classroom around the corner and down the hall from the venerable college radio station, KCMU 90.3 FM (now known as KEXP) in the Communications Building on the University of Washington campus in Seattle.

Our Virtual Pet Is Sick

Today, we learned that Milo, the sea otter in the otter exhibit in the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park whom we here at Mint faithfully check in on several times a day thanks to the aquarium’s webcam (here: http://www.vanaqua.org/ottercam/), has lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system’s lymphatic cells that is the seventh or so most common cancer in humans.

According to the aquarium note, lymphoma in sea otters is very rare, and Milo will be kept outside of public viewing while he receives treatment, so until he returns, his exhibit partner, Tanu, will be swimming around, eating, grooming and sleeping on the water all by herself. We hope Milo has a speed recovery.

And on a related aquarium note, there is also a beluga cam at the Vancouver Aquarium, where you can see the four belugas, including one youngish one, swimming about and diving and surfacing and eating in silence. The webcam is located here: http://www.vanaqua.org/belugacam/

Why yes, that is a portrait of Mint Randy and his pet, Ozzie the cat. Caitlin Gallupe of Slam Dunk/Immaculate Machine did the art. It gets better when we mention that this year, the Mint Xmas Party is a fundraiser to benefit S.A.I.N.T.S. - and end-of-life sanctuary for senior and special needs animals. We get all teary just thinking about it.

This year, there are two dates.

If you ever drop by the Mint office, we’ll likely offer you some sugary pink gum, possibly because we have a soft spot for this classic cub video. The comics found inside the video’s gum are way better than the originals as they feature the cub girls (and Mint Randy!). This makes me so happy.
