It was almost exactly a year to today when Montreal's knitting released their debut LP Some Kind of Heaven on Mint Records. A Montreal group led by Mischa Dempsey (they/them), the band began attracting attention in their native Montreal in 2022, landing opening spots for artists like Nap Eyes, Julie Doiron, Cherry Glazerr, Truth Club and Gulfer, before releasing their Scott Munro (Preoccupations)-produced debut LP in 2024. The album earned a great deal of attention, earning praise from Pitchfork, FADER, Bandcamp, Consequence, BrooklynVegan, Exclaim and Stereogum, who named them a Band To Watch, describing the album as "personal yet sharp, tumultuous yet even-keeled, referential yet original."
Today, the band are sharing their first new single since the release of that LP, a track called "Fold," ahead of a set of tour dates supporting Preoccupations in Europe.
On the lyrical themes of "Fold," Mischa explains: “I wrote this song while I was experiencing a wave of social anxiety. I wanted to explore the suspicion that others will always be able to see something about you that you yourself cannot see, and that thus their perception will always be more accurate. Consequently, in this state of mind I find myself turning into a bit of a people-pleaser (something I’m trying to grow out of). This song is my attempt to shake myself out of this way of thinking, and demonstrate to myself how useless this mindset is.”
The accompanying video directed by Sasha Cay plays on these themes-dropping Mischa into isolated locations, performing the song with an intensity at odds with the urban stillness around them.
